Understanding PageRank and What Influences It
A Page rank is used to determine how probable your target audience will see your website in the search results page once they key in a search query related to the niche of your site. Needless to mention, the higher the page rank, the more visitors your website will receive meaning they will be visiting your site in search of information or even in search of the products and services you have on offer. Even though this is a simplified way of explaining the effect of page rank, it all boils down to the simple fact that the higher you rank the higher your chances of ever smiling on your way to the bank.
While the search engines are different and will employ different algorithms to assign a page rank, basically, the ranking process is all and the same. The search engines will look at the keyword density of a given web page, the amount of traffic the webpage is currently receiving, the overall webpage optimization, and the linking structure of the site in general. They will therefore compare these mentioned factors and give rankings against competing websites by popularity and quality. As a webmaster, you should be aware of these critical factors and implement them to work to your advantage.
While search engines such as Yahoo! and Bing have a role to play, you should put all your focus on Google’s page rank as it is by far the biggest and better. Once you get a good page rank on Google, chances of ranking the same in other search engines is more or less the same. This is not to say that you should never pay attention to optimizing a site for other search engines, it won’t hurt at all, but channel most of your efforts on Google and learn as much as you could about Google’s algorithm.
The niche that you choose to major on will be a very critical determinant of your page rank. Note that different keywords and niche topics will have changeable degrees of already existing competition and generally traffic. Needless to mention, working your way up the top in an already saturated niche market will not be an easy battle, particularly if the top results on the SERPs are aged and highly optimized. Targeting the number one spot in such a niche will be aiming a little too high. At times it becomes even very hard to get even among the top 10 results due to the huge amount of potential traffic in saturated niches. However, in such a situation, even featuring in the top 10 is as much as necessary to become beneficial.
It goes without saying that working with smaller niche markets and not-so-saturated keywords means that there will be no huge existing competition, although it will interpret to less traffic. If you decide to work with a small niche, it will you will have to set up multiple websites which will dedicate to several niches. It will also mean that you will need to have more than one article on a dedicated page on each of the many websites you will be running to be able to truly make a profit. It wouldn’t be impractical to make money from these small niches, but you have to be ready to work your way to scoop the top PageRank to be able to make the same amount that you would make from an otherwise popular niche.
